Cllr Gareth Fairhurst is the Leader of the Wigan Independent Conservatives.

He is also the leader of the Councillor's group on Wigan Council.

He was first elected to Wigan Council in 2004. At that time he was helping to try and Save Mere Oaks Speacial School from closing. He was on the committee that was trying to save the school and the spokesperson for the group. When the group got a petition of over 27000 names to save the school and it was being presented to the Mayor of Wigan Council he organised a trip to London for the protesters so that they could present the petition to Downing Street.

Cllr Gareth Fairhurst is one of the most talked about Councillors on Wigan Council at present. Either people love him or hate him, depending on what your views are on how Wigan Council is being run. He has been described by the local press as, "Outspoken" "Hard Hitting" "Controversial" But once he has got his teeth into something he will not stop digging and working to first find out what the issue is and then work out how best to resolve it.

Cllr Gareth Fairhurst was the Councillor on Wigan Council that championed the George Formby Statue. For many years Wigan Council had refused to have a statue in Wigan of george but the George Formby Society read an article about how Gareth thought Wigan should celebrate this person and they then contacted him to discuss how they could do this. The result after a lot of hard work from the George Formby Society, Modus and Cllr Gareth Fairhurst Wigan got it's own statue of George Formby. When the statue was unveiled by Cllr Gareth Fairhurst and president of George Formby Wigan Grand Arcade was packed.

Many said that having a statue would not be of benefit to Wigan but with Gareth getting this statue in Wigan it has helped the local economy. That opening day there was not a free hotel room in Wigan. People travelled from overseas here to visit Wigan. Since then the George Formby society has met many times in Wigan bring yet more revenue into hotels, resturant shops etc.

But whilst many may know Cllr Gareth Fairhurst for some big issue in Wigan he does not allow the small matters and issues to go. He says that, "The small issues like the state of the footpaths or litter are equally as important as the big issues."
